What is lagna (ascendant)?

Your lagna is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. In Vedic astrology it is the starting point of the whole kundli.

Why the lagna matters

The lagna becomes the 1st house of your birth chart, and every other house is counted from it. So the lagna decides which sign rules your career house, your marriage house, your home and so on. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have completely different charts if their lagnas differ.

The lagna describes your body, temperament and the way you meet the world. The planet that rules the lagna sign, the lagna lord, is one of the most important planets in your chart.

Why birth time is essential

The Earth turns once a day, so all 12 signs rise one after another. On average a new lagna rises about every two hours, but some signs rise faster and some slower depending on your latitude. A birth time that is wrong by 20–30 minutes can be enough to change the lagna near a boundary. If your time is uncertain, the Moon sign and Sun sign are safer to rely on.

Lagna, Moon sign and Sun sign

Lagna: the rising sign, set by time and place, the frame of the whole chart. Moon sign (rashi): where the Moon was, used for daily predictions, sade sati and matching. Sun sign: the sign most Western horoscopes use. In Vedic astrology all three are read together, with lagna and Moon given the most weight.

The 12 lagnas in one line each

Aries lagna: direct, brave, quick to act (lord Mars). Taurus: steady, patient, loves comfort (Venus). Gemini: curious, talkative, adaptable (Mercury). Cancer: caring, emotional, home-loving (Moon). Leo: confident, generous, leads naturally (Sun). Virgo: careful, practical, helpful (Mercury). Libra: fair, charming, partnership-minded (Venus). Scorpio: intense, private, determined (Mars). Sagittarius: optimistic, honest, freedom-loving (Jupiter). Capricorn: disciplined, ambitious, patient (Saturn). Aquarius: independent, original, humane (Saturn). Pisces: gentle, intuitive, imaginative (Jupiter).

Lagna lord: the planet that steers your chart

Whichever planet rules your lagna sign is called the lagna lord (lagnesh). Its house and sign show where your life energy naturally flows. A lagna lord in the 10th points to a life shaped by career and public role; in the 4th, by home, family and inner peace; in the 9th, by learning, travel and faith. A strong, well-placed lagna lord is traditionally one of the best signs of a resilient life.

Planets in the 1st house

Any planet sitting in the lagna colours your personality strongly. Sun there gives confidence and a need for respect; Moon, sensitivity and a gentle face; Mars, energy and boldness; Mercury, quick wit; Jupiter, wisdom and a generous nature; Venus, charm and good looks; Saturn, seriousness and endurance; Rahu, ambition and an unusual path; Ketu, depth and a detached, spiritual streak.

Common myths about the lagna

"My lagna is bad." No lagna is good or bad; each has strengths and lessons. "Lagna is just the Western rising sign." Not exactly: Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind the Western one, so many people get a different sign. "Only the lagna matters." It is the frame, but the Moon, the planets and the dashas fill in the picture.

When the birth time is uncertain

If you only know a rough time, such as "early morning", look at which lagnas that window gives and read both possibilities. Astrologers also use life events to fine-tune the time, called birth-time rectification. Until then, rely more on your Moon sign and nakshatra, which change far more slowly.

Questions people ask

Can I know my lagna without birth time?

Not reliably. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, so an accurate time is needed.

Is lagna the same as rising sign?

Yes. Lagna is the Sanskrit name for the ascendant or rising sign; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so it can differ from a Western rising sign.

Which is more important, lagna or Moon sign?

Both. Lagna is the frame of the chart; the Moon sign is used for daily timing and mind. Good readings use both.
