Rahu and Ketu in simple words
Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path, the lunar nodes, which is why they are called shadow planets (chhaya graha).
Draw your Rahu–Ketu axis
Tap the house where Rahu sits in your chart. Ketu is always exactly opposite.

Why they matter
Eclipses happen near these two points, and ancient astronomers tracked them carefully. In astrology Rahu, the north node, and Ketu, the south node, are always exactly opposite each other and move backwards through the zodiac, spending about 18 months in each sign and completing a cycle in about 18½ years.
Rahu: desire and the new
Rahu represents ambition, worldly desire, the unusual, foreign things, technology and sudden rise. Where Rahu sits in your chart is an area of life you feel hungry for and keep reaching towards. Well placed, it can give fame and unconventional success; afflicted, it can bring restlessness and confusion.
Ketu: detachment and insight
Ketu represents detachment, past skills, intuition, research and spirituality. Where Ketu sits is an area that comes naturally but may feel less satisfying, encouraging you to look deeper. It is linked with moksha, spiritual liberation.
The axis in your chart
Because they are always opposite, Rahu and Ketu form an axis across two houses, for example 1st and 7th (self and partner) or 4th and 10th (home and career). Astrologers read this as a life lesson: balancing the Rahu side you are growing into with the Ketu side you already know.
Rahu and Ketu periods
Rahu dasha lasts 18 years and Ketu dasha 7 years in the Vimshottari system. Results depend on their house, sign and the planets connected to them.
Rahu and Ketu in the houses (short guide)
1st and 7th: lessons between self and partnership. 2nd and 8th: family wealth versus sudden change and research. 3rd and 9th: courage and skills versus faith and higher learning. 4th and 10th: home and peace versus career and status. 5th and 11th: creativity and children versus gains and networks. 6th and 12th: service and competition versus rest, foreign lands and spirituality. The Rahu side is the area you are growing into; the Ketu side is what you already know.
The story behind them
In the legend of the churning of the ocean, the demon Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality in disguise. Vishnu cut off his head; the head became Rahu and the body Ketu. Because the Sun and Moon revealed him, Rahu and Ketu are said to "swallow" them at eclipses, the mythological picture of the nodes where eclipses happen.
Rahu and Ketu transits
About every 18 months the nodes move into a new pair of signs. This shift is watched closely because it changes which life areas feel restless (Rahu) and which feel like they are letting go (Ketu). Read the transit from your lagna and Moon sign to see which houses are involved for you.
Kaal Sarp yoga, briefly
When all seven planets fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, the chart is called Kaal Sarp. It is widely discussed but not found in the major classical texts, and many astrologers say its importance is exaggerated. As always, read the whole chart and avoid fear-based, expensive remedies.
Simple free remedies
For Rahu: chant the Durga or Rahu mantra, feed stray dogs, stay honest in dealings. For Ketu: worship Lord Ganesha, chant a Ketu mantra, spend quiet time in meditation. No gemstone is needed.

Are Rahu and Ketu always bad?
No. They can give great success and deep insight depending on their placement.
Why do Rahu and Ketu move backwards?
The lunar nodes regress slowly because of the gravitational pull of the Sun on the Moon's orbit, completing a cycle in about 18.6 years.
